On Sunday 26 May, the Big Brother launch show will come alive
when multiple award winning musicians from Nigeria, Kenya and
South Africa take centre stage. The big night will also see 28 new
housemates being revealed to audiences in over 50 African countries
for season 8 of Big Brother Africa, The Chase.

Sweet-voiced Wande Coal, is not leaving Mavins Records. The singer and songwriter, has come out to dispel rumours that surfaced this week, claiming that he was about to set up his own record label. “There have been no such plans, and I wish to remain in Mavin Records,” Wande Coal said in the statement, that was released on Mavin’s offical website. “Mavin Records is my family and will always remain so. I want to thank all my fans for continuing to support me. We still have a very long journey ahead.” This is not the first time such stories have arisen. And at that time, Wande Coal, released a single ‘Been long you saw me’, specifically to address them. The artiste joined the defunct MoHits Records in 2008.

Wande Coal to set up his own record label

Wande Coal will in a couple of months unveil his own record label called BLACK DIAMOND. The label is already registered and has 2 artistes on it with their singles to be released in 2013. The record label, which is being managed by Wande’s manager Abbey Nana, has been Wande’s dream dream since his days at Mo’Hits before moving on with Don Jazzy as an established artiste under Mavin Records. Sources close to Wande disclosed to Music Gist that he was inspired to float his own label about 2 years ago when he started having problems with D’banj over the release of his 2nd album. He made efforts to leave Mo’Hits Records but was held back by Don Jazzy who promised to straighten his career for him no matter what. That Wande is floating his own label might give people reasons to speculate a fight between Don Jazzy and Wande since he is signed onto his label Mavin but we can authoritatively tell you that they are on good terms and have an understanding about Wande’s move. Don Jazzy ,we learnt ,has given Wande the grace and support to float his label and also promised to support him.

NBC bans Wande Coal’s video for ‘Go Low’

Wande Coal‘s latest video ‘Go low’ has received a ban from the National Broadcasting Commission, a week and two days after the video was premiered. We’re told the NBC has released a list of videos which included the MAVIN Records’ video which was directed and shot by Mr Moe Musa in the UK. The NTBB (not to be broadcast) ban however only restricts the video from being played on ‘Free-to-air’ TV stations. That means viewers of cable TV stations can still watch the video as the ban doesn’t affect them from playing it.

The Channel O Music Video Awards, have announced this year’s nominees and 13 Nigerian artistes make the final cut. As she made it abundantly clear on Twitter, Kenny Saint Brown, is not happy with the nature of the music videos coming from Mavin Records. We are now Mavin Records! Don Jazzy unveils new label with Tiwa Savage

Don Jazzy has broken the silence over his future by today announcing the launch of his new record label. Mavin Records, a wholly independent label, will be the new home for former Mo’Hits stalwarts: Wande Coal, Dr. Sid and D’Prince. The multiple award winning producer also announced that Tiwa Savage would be joining the Mavin family. The signing of Savage, one of Nigeria’s leading vocalists, is seen as a major coup for the budding record label and Don Jazzy promised fans that there are many more exciting faces to be “activated” by the label in the near future. Following a very public split with former Mo’Hits partner, Dbanj, speculation had been rife about what projects the producer had lined up. Several stories had rumbled about relations between the pair but Don Jazzy revealed that his eyes are focused firmly on the future. “I know that there are questions unanswered, mysteries unsolved and wounds to heal,” the producer said. “But I would really appreciate if we allow time to heal the wounds for us all instead of digging them up again.” The founder and CEO of the new label has spent the last three weeks locked in the recording studio along with the fellow “Mavins” as they finalise plans for their debut compilation album, Solar Plexus, released 8th May. The album has been a collaborative labour of love which has traversed five countries. In the same vein as the previously released Curriculum Vitae by the Mo’Hits All Stars, Solar Plexus will exclusively showcase the musical talents of the Mavin Records crew. D’Banj Lied, He Never Bought a Car For Don Jazzy – Wande Coal

The highly talked about split between D’Banj and Don Jazzy took another dimension yesterday. An email reported to have been exchanged between Don Jazzy and D’Banj leaked and it was a news material by online media yesterday. Just when the said email was still generating hot reactions from both camps, a members of the troubled Mohits group has reacted to the reported content of D’Banj’s side of the email. Wande Coal took to his twitter account handle and tweeted “as much as I would like to be quiet on this issue, seeing people’s response to this so called leaked emails, I cant take it any longer. He then went further to tweet “saying that he (D’Banj) bought a car for Don Jazzy is wrong and untrue. Come onnnnnn. Well, I don’t think he said it sha, until I see a video of it.

The latest on the rift between two former Mohits label owners, Don Jazzy and D’Banj is the shocking revelations from a purported leaked e-mail. According to the e-mail, D’Banj claims he is more generous than Don Jazzy. A copy of the e-mail (sent on March 17), which first exclusively got to a reporter with Punch newspaper, but was also later made available to DailyPost is reproduced below; Don Jazzy’s E-Mail To D’Banj That Mohits Records does not already own 100 per cent of the songs. Note that Mohits Records only owns 60 per cent of the songs and 40 per cent belongs to the individual artiste. So, 40 per cent of the songs is not mine to give. That me [I am] giving him (D’banj) my share of the catalogue does not and will never include him having the right to stop them (the artistes) from performing the songs or give him the right to claim any monies for live performances of these songs. And any loans or debt owed by Mohits Records as at today will be cleared by Mr D’banj as I am clearly not aware of any. So, songs like Wande Coal’s Go Low and Been Long You Saw Me are not part of this catalogue he is receiving. Also, an artiste like D’Prince, not only has he not released any album, he has not signed any contract whatsoever with Mohits Records. That he has no right to claim any monies for deals that have been brokered already as at today with the catalogues or stop their usage. It is important to note that any unreleased songs done by any artiste (including D’banj and K Switch) MUST NOT be released and is not part of the catalogue I am giving away. With these few points, I do hope that you all realise that I have been generous enough to facilitate the end of the “D’banj & Don Jazzy” era as a team. After this new deal has been signed and sealed, I do NOT look forward to seeing an email whatsoever or hearing from the DKM (D’banj, K-Switch, Mohits) crew, and all is well again. D’Banj’s Reply To Don Jazzy In case he (Don Jazzy) forgot, this is the arrangement! 50/50—–song writer/ production, which means for a song X for artiste Y, 75 per cent as per production is fully owned by Mohits and writing is shared 25/25 with the individual artiste co- writing. So, that’s the deal! So him saying 40 percent is not his to give away is more like 75 percent for me and 25 percent for each artiste. What do you mean by any bills or loans would be cleared by Mr. D’banj? That will never happen because when I ran the company, I ran it perfectly and well. So, if I give him my shares he is left with 100 per cent liability. My catalogue is everything that has been done with the Mohits system and under the normal agreement we have, that means everything I have recorded or that has been recorded whether new or old, or even classic, whether beat with concept or even idea without beats, anything we did as a team and sponsored by me throughout, then, it is mine. Including K-Switch clause and all mine and even Wande’s singles and all till the date of signing even today. And now, [I] wanna clear the air on this Samsung deal! I would expect by now that you understand that me keeping quiet is being GENEROUS because this is a deal structured under Mohits Records, [and it is] the first deal and income you would ever bring into the company in eight years. We shared the first 150k (One hundred and fifty thousand dollars) the right way, 1/3 down and that was cool. But after you collected another 130k and did not say anything [that] is and could be described as theft! I only refused to contact them (Samsung) directly because of your reputation. But please don’t call me a fool and let’s know who is generous!” Please, please, will he (Don Jazzy) return the Bentley because I bought it for him and it was N5.2m more than mine? And Prince that he claims has no signed contract but is actively involved and signed via engagement– I win his catalogue too – all recorded whether released now or not! This is because no one questioned me when I bought D’Prince N11m naira car (LR3/Range) without releasing any album just to boost the image of the boy and it worked for him! So, let’s get the facts straight, I AM BEING MORE THAN GENEROUS.
