Queen Elizabeth hosts Diamond Jubilee lunch

Britain’s Queen Elizabeth hosted a Diamond Jubilee lunch for 26 kings and queens yesterday (18.05.12). The monarch greeted royals from around the world, including Prince Mohammed of Saudi Arabia, Bahrain’s King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, the King of Jordan and his wife Queen Rania, and King Constantine of Greece at a lunch at Windsor Castle to celebrate her 60th year on the throne. The queen and Prince Philip were joined by Prince William and Duchess Catherine – who got married in April last year, the last time such a large group of foreign royals met – Prince Harry, Prince Andrew and his daughters Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie. The 98 guests dined on a meal of poached egg tartlet with asparagus followed by Windsor lamb with braised potatoes, artichokes, peas, cabbage and broad beans, and the group enjoyed strawberries for desert. Catherine – who was formerly known as Kate Middleton before she tied the knot to William – was spotted laughing and joking with Harry over a glass of champagne and she posed for photos with William. However, demonstrators protested outside Buckingham Palace last night (18.05.12), as the foreign leaders headed there for dinner with Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall, over the decision to invite some of the figures to the Diamond jubilee lunch. A number of critics said there had been a “catastrophic error of judgment” to invite leaders such as the King of Bahrain – who has been condemned after a violent crackdown on political dissent in his country – to the Windsor Castle event, but officials insisted the Foreign Office approved the guest list.

Queen Elizabeth II to Open 2012 Olympics

Queen Elizabeth II will open both the 2012 olympics and the Paralympics this summer, signaling that both events will be celebrated as great state occasions ,something the British are famous for.
The monarch and her husband, prince philip will perform the ceremonial role at the 80,000-seat Olympic Stadium when the Olympic games begin in london on July 27, and for the Paralympic Games that start Aug. 29 .
The queen follows in the footsteps of her father, the late King George VI, who opened the 1948London Olympics, and her great-grandfather, King Edward VII, who opened the 1908 London Olympics.
The decision to open both ceremonies caps a very busy year for the queen, whose this year marks her 60 years on the throne.
