UNILAG: Management postpones resumption till June 18

Authority of University of Lagos (UNILAG) yesterday shifted the resumption of academic activities in the school earlier scheduled for today till June 18. It will be recalled that the university Senate had, on Wednesday, May 30, shut down the institution over students’ protests on the changing of the University to Moshood Abiola University by President Goodluck Jonathan on May 29, to celebrate the democracy day. In a statement from the information unit of the university and signed by Mr. Wale Olasunmade, the management yesterday reviewed the suspension of academic activities and considered postponing them for another one week, probably to allow the tension on the campus to calm down completely. The statement reads in part “The university’s Senate at its emergency meeting yesterday resolved that all academic activities should resume on Monday, June, 18, and
accordingly, the halls of residence will be reopened on Sunday, June 17, 2012 at 4pm,” . While reaffirming its position on the re-naming of the institution, the University senate said “We also resolved that the proposed re-naming of the University of Lagos is not acceptable and is rejected in its entirety as it is a mere declaration of intention with no legal effect. The Senate, therefore, supports all legal processes being carried out by all stakeholders on the subject,” the management
