2015: Don’t over-stretch your ‘good luck’ by trying to remain in power – Tsav tells Jonathan

Elder statesman and a former Lagos State Police
Commissioner, Abubakar Tsav, has advised President
Goodluck Jonathan not to over-stretch his “good luck” by
remaining in power beyond 2015.
Tsav, who spoke with newsmen in Makurdi, the Benue
State capital on Sunday noted that the nation would
continue to retrogress as long as greed and corruption
remain in control, adding that 2015 would determine
whether Nigeria will still remain as one indivisible
country or not.
While he attributed this to the intention of Jonathan to
contest the 2015 presidential election, he urged the
president to burry his ambition in the interest of the
nation.
He said, “President Jonathan’s followers are saying there
would be war if he does not win in 2015. He should save
us that trouble by relinquishing his ambition in the
interest of the old and young people in this country.”
Tsav reminded Jonathan of how God made him to rise
from the position of deputy governor to president, even
as he urged him not to run for second term in office.
Adding his voice to the ongoing debate over the
inconclusive Anambra governorship election, Tsav
described the Attahiru Jega-led INEC as a shame to the
nation.
The former police boss asserted that the Independent
National Electoral Commission, INEC, was not capable of
conducting credible elections in the country.
According to him, judging from the Anambra election,
the hope of conducting free, fair and credible elections
in the country has been dashed.

Album Review | Ice Prince – Fire Of Zamani

FIRE OF ZAMANI
ICE PRINCE
RECORD LABEL: CHOCOLATE CITY
YEAR: 2013
IcePrince is the most sellable Nigerian rapper at the
moment. The only person that can wear an Agbada with
sneakers and still look super dapper. The best rapper in
Africa considering the recent BET Awards as the Best
International Act: Africa. After the success of his first
Album Everybody Loves IcePrince, he has consistently
dropped hit singles and collaborated with other
musicians. At a time when fellow Chocolate City artistes
are dropping off the record label, he has maintained a
good relationship with his label and has focused on his
music career.
IcePrince is an outstanding artiste but this review is not
about his life, past or awards but about the collection of
songs titled FIRE OF ZAMANI. Enter the Fire of Zamani,
Ice Prince’ sophomore Album:
Stars & Lights: A soulful and inspirational way to start
the album is Ice talking about the journey so far, his
struggles and hustle. He gives props to his crew and
most importantly MI. Ruby did very well to make the
hook and the song enjoyable. /if there has ever been a
rap this fly, it had to be done by an M.I’s guy/
Aboki is one of the most important tracks on this Album
and yet it is clear that iceprince sang all through without
necessarily dropping rap bars. The beat is groovy and it’s
a heavy party track. With repetitive lyrics, he mentions
many rich Hausas as his ‘guys’.
My Life sounds more like a live performance by a band
in a local joint. Iceprince delivers the chorus cold and it
has more singing than rapping. He talks about his life in
bits and pieces without any particular direction.
Mercy has a lot of repetitive keys and it starts to get
boring till Chip a British rapper resuscitates the song
with his rap verse. The chorus is a stereotype dancehall
hook
Another Sammy Gyang production, a story based song
but the big question mark on this song is: Why feature
Sunny Neji on a song if he won’t sing the chorus for you?
Maybe to achieve a surprise effect, I guess its different
strokes for different folks. On the overall, Whiskey is a
good song.
The N-Word song sounds like a Rick-Ross song though it
was produced by Ace producer Don-Jazzy. Considering
it’s a hardcore rap song, this track comes off as an irony
from a producer who thinks that the Rap Genre still has
a long way to go. Ice Prince came hard on this one. To
appreciate the rhymes in this song, one should omit the
N-word at the end of each line . Pretty Impressive. /We
don dey gather all the Cheese N****, Big Shots chilling
Overseas N****. Fast Whips automatic keys N****, So
when we drive by e dey be like breeze N****/
Jambo is a spirit lifting song, a bit groovy and fun. A
Chopstix production with a catch word: Jambo. Jambo is
not well defined and it leaves inquisitive minds
wondering what the true meaning of Jambo is, but when
you think of it, the mystery is a positive. Enjoyable song.
No die Tomorrow has a reggae beat with political
activism content in the lyrics. This song shows political
side of Ice Prince. It’s a bit awkward coming from a
commercial African rapper, but that doesn’t mean he
cant speak his mind right? Just doesn’t sound believable
for some reason. /2015 na him be the question, my
people dey anticipate who go be the next one, afterall we
no say dem go rig election/
Gimme dat is a dancehall hit enjoying play on most
radio stations across the continent , it features some of
the best new acts. Burnaboy serenades the song with his
signature voice, Young L comes through with Jamaica
styled lyrics and Olamide delivers his verses in his local
Yoruba tongue.
Komotion is yet another Dancehall Reggae fusion this
time featuring Wizkid. If you love dancehall then this will
be your favorite track. IcePrince and Wizkid prove they
can do music that is not the stereotype naija styled
music.
I Swear is the most anticipated song on this album
having featured French Montana an A-list international
act on Maybach Music Group and Badboy records. Ice
Prince did a good job on this dance-hall track,
unfortunately we cant say the same for French Montana.
Person wey sabi is a harmonic tune and a typical African
song with drums and trumpets. A groovy and celebratory
song, it will pass for a highlife song that puts you in a
happy mood. The kind of song that you don’t even want
to know what the lyrics are about.
Kpako is one of the strongest songs on this album
featuring his old time friends M.I. and Jesse Jagz. Even
though they were not all present in the studio and
recorded the songs independently because of busy
schedules and logistics it wasn’t clear that there was no
chemistry or bonding between the artistes. Jesse jagz
came out tops on this one.
Pray initially starts up like filler on the album. If not for
the fact that Sound Sultan was featured and he added a
little spice on the track then it would have been another
boring song on this album.
More is a reggae infused melodic tune that gets everyone
singing along. Here Ice Prince raps excellently like he
was in a battle when actually it is supposed to be a love
song. Rhymes, punch lines and metaphors characterize
his rap. The newer fine-tuned version makes it an
excellent song. / It’s too much bomb and hate that kinda
complicates. Its too much dropping around and now u
talking out of state/
On my Knees is a Gospel like song featuring Jeremiah
Gyang with African drums. The Plateau state citizens
ended the Fire of Zamani Project by thanking God. The
song does well to take those who grew up in Plateau
state down memory ran.
Fire of Zamani is an anti-climax coming from a Nigerian
artiste like Ice Prince who has an outstanding debut
album. On some tracks he comes out exceptional on his
vocals but on other tracks his voice comes out flat like he
is not putting in enough effort. One would be tempted
say this was a rushed project. Sometimes he strays off
from the theme of a song in pursuit of Punch lines.
However, for an album with about 5 hit singles it is safe
to say it is a good project, but falls below the hype With
international collaborations and recognition, Fire of
Zamani marks the beginning of a new era for Ice Prince.
He is saddled with the responsibility of representing
Nigeria and Africa in general. We can only wait for the
future to unfold what comes next for him.

VIDEO: Veteran Rapper, Modenine, Olamide And Phyno Joined Ice Prince To Light Up FOZ With Gimme Dat

Veteran rapper, Modenine, Olamide, Phyno and Yung L
joined Ice Prince to deliver a show stopping performance
of the track Gimme Dat at the Fire Of Zamani concert. Ice
Prince started with a solo performance and even invited
Dele Momodu’s son, Enikorewafunmi to join him on
stage when he noticed the young boy singing excitedly.
They were later joined on stage by Phyno who delivered
some sick flows in Igbo, Yung L made a grand entrance
with his reggae style rap while Olamide added a touch of
fuji to the performance.
Ice Prince introduced Modenine as an inspiration to
Nigerian rappers and he finished the song with some
freestyle rap.
Enikorewafunmi, who is quite popular on his father’s
Instagram page, had his 15 minutes of fame performing
with Nigerian superstars.

Insecurity: Butchers Union denies allegation of breeding Boko Haram in Borno

Alhaji Abubakar Gula, Chairman of the Borno State
butchers association has denied the allegation by the
Gwoza Christian Community Association (GCCA), that they
were using the Maiduguri abatoir as a breeding ground
for the Islamic sect, Boko Haram.
He described the allegation as reckless, false and a
misrepresentation, under the guise of religion,
advertently to disrupt the relative peace being enjoyed by
the citizens of Borno State.
The Christian Community in Gwoza Local Government
Council of Borno State had in the recent past suffered
numbers of attacks, which they claimed was caused by
some politicians, who allegedly use the butchers of
Gwoza community in Borno to slaughter Christians.
The butchers’ association in a statement made available
to DailyPost in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital on
Monday, also stated that the sum of N25, 000,000
(twenty-five million naira) given to the butchers by Borno
State Governor, Kashim Shettima, was a grant to the
National Butchers’ Union of Nigeria, Maiduguri Branch.
“It is a common knowledge that such a gigantic
commercial site cannot be said to have consist of only
people from Gwoza, but it comprises of people from
different states of the federation irrespective of their
religion or tribes as well as people from the neigbouring
countries of Niger, Chad and Cameroon republic”, the
statement signed by Alhaji Gula stressed.
They condemned the allegation that the abattoir was a
breeding ground for insurgency in the state, describing it
as malicious, baseless and devilish, intended only to
instigate hatred and disaffection among the peace loving
people of the state.
Also, Alhaji Mala Modu, the Chief Butcher at the Borno
Abattoir, said the allegation by GCCA was a deliberate
attempt to paint the group black and also tarnish the
image of its operators.

Jonathan fires another aide, gives no reason

President Goodluck Jonathan had on Sunday sacked Mrs.
Aisha Umar as his Special Assistant on Social
Development.
The sack notice was contained in a brief statement issued
on Sunday in Abuja by Mr. Sam Nwaobasi, the Special
Assistant (Media) to the Secretary of the Government of
the Federation, Senator Anyim Pius Anyim with Ref. No:
PPR/OSGF/PR/02. However, the statement did not give
details on why the aide was relieved of her job.
The statement further stated that, the termination takes ”
effect from the November 25, 2013.”
Recall that the President had in few months back sacked
three of his aides. The first was the Minister of Youth
Development, Inuwa Abdulkadir, followed by the Special
Adviser on National Assembly Matters, Mrs. Joy Emordi
as well as his Special Adviser on the New Partnership for
Africa’s Development, Dr. Tunji Olagunju.

ASUU agrees to suspend strike, states three conditions

According to reports from the Nigerian Eye, Nigerian
university lecturers have agreed to end the five-month
old strike, if the federal government says yes to three of
it conditions.
These conditions will be made known to President
Goodluck Jonathan today and if all parties come to
agreement, the strike will be called off.
ASUU has forbidden its local chapters and zonal
chairman from talking to the media, until the end of the
session. But a source, who was part of the ASUU session,
which was held at Mambayya House in Kano, revealed
the conditions as:
•Commitment from the President that any review or
reconsideration or renegotiation of the 2009 Agreement
will not substantially affect the pact which is the cause of
the ongoing strike;
•Immediate payment of all outstanding salary arrears
and allowances of varsity teachers without victimization;
and
•A written commitment from the President that the
Federal Government will commit N225billion annually to
the funding of universities for the next four years.
There is a fourth condition, which is said to be “personal”
to ASUU.
The source said: “Our leaders are meeting with the
President on Monday to table these conditions. Once the
President accepts these three terms, the strike will be
called off.
“In principle, members voted about 60-40 per cent to call
off the strike, but they added a caveat – that ASUU
leaders should extract a commitment (signed and sealed)
from the President.”
It became imperative for ASUU to makes these demands,
as it became obvious that the FG wanted the 2009
Agreement to be renegotiated.
“If ASUU had accepted to renegotiate the entire
Agreement , it means there will be no basis for the
ongoing strike. The worst that can happen is either
having the abridged version of the 2009 Agreement or a
phased implementation of the document,” the source
added.

Rivers crisis: Opposition politicians condemn visit of APC leaders to the state

Ahead of the high powered delegation of the All Progressives Congress, APC, to Rivers State, Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in the state, Felix Obuah has accused Governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi of hiring a crowd of supporters to cheer the General Mohammadu Buhari and Bola Tinubu-led APC team at the Port Harcourt International Airport. Obuah made the accusation at the Grassroot Development Initiative rally held in Eleme, Rivers State. He alleged that the whooping sum of over N500 million has been budget for the purported propaganda. “Only yesterday, he (Amaechi) has given out N500 million of our state money to a nearby state to mobilize people to the airport to receive the leadership of APC. Is that what our money is meant for? “If for any reason Amaechi is not comfortable with the peace we are witnessing in the state and he’s going about giving out our money to other people from Edo and nearby states to come and support him here, we say no”, Obuah alleged. He also said Amaechi should be held responsible for any breakdown of law and order in the state. “As a mark of sign and warning, I want to say that if there is any breakdown of law and order in this state, Governor Rotimi Amaechi should be held responsible”, he said. DailyPost reports that other speakers at the rally includes Supervising Minister of Education, Nyesom Wike, National Deputy National Chairman of the PDP, Uche Secondus and Nigerian Ambassador to South-Korea, Desmond Akawoh also criticized the impending visit of APC officials According to Secondus, “days from now, you will see that those that are not in GDI and those of them that are in government will be declaring for APC and they will leave us alone in PDP. I announce to you that there will be thanksgiving. Let them go. We shall meet at the polls”. The APC members are expected in Rivers State and other members of the G-7 states as part of their nationwide membership drive for the newly formed party.

ASUU strike: Union rejects FG’s N200bn offer

The end to the ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union Of Universities, ASUU, might not be in view yet, as the union has rejected the offer of N200 billion by the Federal Government. The government had earlier offered N130 to the protesting lecturers in order to resolve the impasse; the offer was also increased to N150 billion, all of which ASUU rejected, insisting that government must implement the 2009 agreement. The union asserted that going by the 2009 agreement, government is supposed to have injected N500 billion by the end of 2013, with another N500 billion by 2014. Nassarawa State University Keffi (NSUK) branch chairman of the Union, Dr. Thephilus Lagithe stated that the actual amount in the 2009 agreement was N1.3 trillion to be paid over a period of four years. He said, “Recently, they called us and said instead of the 100 billion, we are giving you N150 and recently they said from that 150 billion, they are going to make it 200 billion. But these are just promises. Speaking further, he said, “last year, they were supposed to inject N100 billion and this year N400 billion. Then next year, N500 billion. But from all indication, the government is not even serious about injecting money into the education sector. It said the N100 billion which the government had earlier promised to give the union was supposed to have been paid in 2012. It said if the strike continues to 2014, the money will then rise to N900 billion.

Boko Haram attacks wedding convoy, kills groom, 30 others

Gunmen in north-eastern Nigeria city of Borno state have reportedly killed 30 people in an attack on a wedding convoy. The incident occurred on a notoriously dangerous road between Bama and Banki in Borno State. The groom was one of those said to have been killed in the attack. Despite the state of emergency declared by the Nigerian government, the Islamist militant group, Boko Haram has continued to attack Borno residents and the special security forces mobilized to the state. A commercial driver who ran into the scene of the attack had told AFP news agency that many of the victims appeared to have died out of bullet wounds. “All the victims were brutally murdered by the attackers,” said the driver, who had pleaded that his identity be concealed. “My passengers and I were shocked when we met the dead bodies lying by the highway.” It is not clear whether the bride and his family members survived the attack.

N255m cars scandal: Stakeholders call for EFCC, ICPC probe of aviation sector

Stakeholders in the aviation sector have urged the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, and the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission, ICPC, to as a matter of urgency intervene in the ongoing aviation crisis, by probing its officials. The stakeholders had made this call, after having reviewed the N255 million armoured car scam involving the Aviation Minister, Princess Stella Oduah, and Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, NCAA. Speaking to newsmen on the stakeholder’s position, former National Secretary of the Airlines Operators of Nigeria, AON, Alhaji Mohammed Tukur, said that it was imperative the anti-graft agency come into the matter now that the sector is enmeshed in corruption. “It is a sad situation because we have never had this level of corruption in this industry. The corruption in the Aviation Ministry is huge. It is not only NCAA that bought such vehicles. I can tell you on good authority that the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, FAAN, and Nigerian Airspace Management Agency, NAMA, also bought some vehicles. “That is why we are asking the anti-graft agencies to investigate these aviation parastatals. It is not only the Minister that is involved. If somebody asked you to do something illegal, why not resign, instead of doing it?” Tukur asked. Tukur, who reiterated his trust in the ability of President Goodluck Jonathan to tackle the issue vehemently, said that his position in the matter was crucial to the popularity of his government, hence shielding those involved in the matter will tarnish his government’s image. In a similar assertion, the National Cabin Crew Association, NACCA, expressed surprise over the purchase of the armoured cars. He had argued that, addressing security in the sector does not justify price inflation, affirming that the cost of the two vehicles was indefensible.

Honour agreement with ASUU – Former students tell FG

A group of former students under the aegis of Past Rivers State Students’ Leaders’ Forum have called on the Federal Government to honour the agreement it had with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU). The ex-students’ leaders appealed to the government to show more commitment towards resolving the impasse in order to save the education system from collapse. Chairman of PARSLEAF, Mr. Amakiri Amakuro, told newsmen in Port Harcourt that the disagreement between ASUU and the Federal Government would have been resolved if government had acted quickly on the earlier notice from the Union. Amakuro also charged ASUU, other unions in the nation’s tertiary institutions and stakeholders in the educational sector to embrace peace and return to the negotiating table with government in the interest of the country. He said, “We appreciate the Federal Government’s appeals for understanding and commitment to meeting ASUU’s demand. We, however, call on the Federal Government to make further commitment to honour the agreement it entered into with ASUU in order to save the educational system from total collapse. “We also call on the leadership of ASUU to explore other means of engaging with government in drawing their attention, as the option of strike is no longer fashionable and acceptable. “If strike must be used, it should not last for more than a few hours as is the practice in developed countries. We passionately appeal to the Federal Government, ASUU and other stakeholders in the educational sector to sheathe their swords,” he said.

Yobe students’ massacre: HURIWA asks for sack of heads of Police, SSS

Angered by the brutal murder of scores of students of the College of Agriculture, Gujba, Yobe State, the Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria has called for the sack of the state’s Commissioner of Police and Director of the Department of State Security. HURIWA said it was an apparent dereliction of duty on their part as they were to protect innocent civilians. In a statement signed by its National Coordinator, Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko, and its Director of Media Affairs, Miss. Zainab Yusuf, HURIWA said the failure of the Federal Government to hold top security chiefs responsible for failure of security in their areas of jurisdiction was partly responsible for the continuous breach of peace and security by all sorts of armed non-state actors across Nigeria since this administration assumed office. The rights group also said governments at every level have the constitutional obligation of safeguarding lives and property of every citizen in Nigeria and that the continuous violation of this sacred task was undemocratic and unconstitutional. It said this may gradually erode people’s confidence in the ability of the government to exercise its constitutional authority and legitimacy. HURIWA chided Federal Government for continuously failing to take urgent, comprehensive and result-oriented measures to build up the intelligence gathering capacity of armed operatives of Nigeria’s security forces. It described this as the root -cause of the dare-devil ‘successes’ recorded so far by armed Islamic insurgents and other armed non-state actors responsible for the spate of organised mass killings of Nigerians across the Northern states of Borno, Yobe, Plateau and Kaduna.

If Nigerians don’t want you, please go in peace – Gumi tells Jonathan

Respected Islamic scholar, Sheik Ahmad Gumi yesterday took a swipe on President Goodluck Jonathan when he accused him of being too desperate for power at the expense of the nation. The cleric also accused “Jonathan’s people” as being behind the crises facing the country, said the bombings from October 1, 2010 to date were largely scripted play being acted out. Gumi, who took to Facebook to pour out his anger, said Jonathan should kindly resign if Nigerians don’t want him. He however added that despite all the challenges, Nigeria will still survive. He said, “Yes, from the onset, Mr Goodluck was apparently in a struggle to grab power and to cling to power even if that is at the cost of innocent Nigerian lives. Well it turned out that his people were the culprits. “Like Boko Haram, Nigeria can only boast of its success on its survival. We see despite heavy fatalities and injuries of thousands of people and the grounded economic life of the North East, the purported Boko Haram leader can only boast on his ability to prove he is still alive. Just like Boko Haram, Nigeria is real but unrealistic, naïve and self annihilating, why? Because those that lead the two phenomena are dehumanised of all human sensibilities. They trade blood for power! “The mere survival of Nigeria as a unified entity is the only successful story in the 53 years of its independence. Mr Jonathan should know that power is no substitute for blood, i.e. you cannot spill other people’s blood to stay in power and remain flourishing. You should ask Assad about that. You can call (General) Sisi in Egypt and ask him about that. The psycho-trauma is enough to finish one’s life,” Gumi said. He further said that nobody was safe in the country today. “Anybody can be attacked and killed, or framed up and arrested. You see or hear of law and order, it is only in books and the compromised newspapers and media. Journalism is dead, justice in the court of law is absent, intellectuals are neutralised, and the populace is largely left poor and uneducated.” He said the late General Shuwa was gruesomely murdered under the very eyes of his army guards without resistance in Maiduguri and no military panel was set up to investigate the killing of such a national hero that fought to keep Nigeria a united country. “Jonathan has only one option left for him. Let him conduct a free and fair election in 2015, from PDP primary elections to the national elections. Let him not be deceived by those wolves that want to push him to his expiration for their corrupt lifestyles. Please Mr Jonathan, if Nigerians don’t want you, please go in peace,” Gumi said.

VIDEO: You Missed It? Watch The Presidential Media Chat

Nigerian President, President Goodluck Jonathan at Presidential Media Chat discussed burning issues. Its a must watch! loaded

I did not have any agreement to serve only one term – Jonathan

President Goodluck Jonathan on Sunday affirmed that he never made any agreement with anybody that he would not run for the 2015 presidential election. The president also denied signing an agreement with some Peoples Democratic Party governors for only one term in office, contrary to the continuous claim by Governor Babangida Aliyu of Niger State and other PDP aggrieved governors. The president affirmed that if an agreement was signed with regard to 2015 election, it must have been presented by those talking about it. Jonathan stated this while fielding questions from a panel of journalists during the Presidential Media Chat in Abuja on Sunday. Asked if he would contest the 2015 election, the President maintained that it was too early for him to decide since such was capable of disrupting the political system. He emphasized that declaration of interest to run or otherwise will generate so much turmoil , hence the need to remain silent over it, and continue to tackle pressing national issues. However, Jonathan asserted that the fact that he had not made his intention known yet, does not mean that other aspirants are stopped from doing so. Jonathan said, “There was no agreement with anybody that I will serve for only one term. If I had signed any agreement with anybody, they would have shown you the agreement. “I did not say that I will not contest in 2015. In Addis Ababa, that was when I advocated single term of seven years. My argument was that to be more productive, maybe we should consider single term of seven years. “ I said if Nigerians agree to that, I may not be involved. I did not say I will contest or not. Those who said I have signed an agreement, they should show the agreement.” Speaking on Boko Haram, Jonathan said the needless killings would have been avoided if the menace of the sect was curbed from the beginning. “Boko Haram did not start today. I was Vice-President in 2009 when (Mohammed) Yusuf (Boko Haram leader) was killed. People talk about Boko Haram as if Jonathan caused it. It started before 2009, but because it was not handled well, it has grown into a cancer and it has become terrible. If something happened and you don’t take the right action, it will continue. But I can assure Nigerians that it will be brought under control,” he added. When asked whether Boko Haram leader, Abubakar Shekau, was truly dead, the President replied, “I don’t know whether he is dead or alive. I don’t know him and I have not seen him before.” On ASUU strike, the president called on the university lecturers to consider the plight of their students and the sincerity of government and call off the strike. The President, however, said it was wrong for ASUU to go on strike because of the state of infrastructure in universities when it was his government that initiated inventory of infrastructure in the institutions and returned a verdict that something drastic must be done. He said, “ASUU strike is very unfortunate. There is no time a government has taken inventory of property in schools, but we set up a technical team that visited all universities. When the report was presented, I said it must be presented to all governors during NEC. “We said things must change but it can’t be done overnight. For us to do that inventory shows that we are committed. For ASUU to go on strike for infrastructure is not fair. We are doing inventory for polytechnics and colleges of education too and they are not being done for fun. “We expect ASUU to work with us. It is unfortunate that the strike lasts this long because we have witnessed strikes before and most of them are called off when government don’t even do up to what we have done. “Politics have fallen into so many things. We may be seeing something different.”

Military will never solve Boko Haram insurgency – Former CDS, Agwai

A former Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Martin Luther Agwai, has stated that Nigeria’s military will not end the current Boko Haram insurgency. Agwai made this declaration on Saturday in Jos at the public launch of a book entitled, ‘Integrity Matters: Men of Honour in the Public Square’, written by the Dean, Graduate School, ECWA Theological Seminary, Jos. In his words: “You can never solve any of these problems with military solutions. The military can always be an enabling force. They will sensitise; they will stabilise the area. It is a political issue; it is a social issue; it is an economic issue, and until these issues are addressed, the military can never give you a solution. “So, to say the military has failed or is overwhelmed or has not failed is incorrect. But I will say that if anybody expects the military to give him a solution to this problem, it will be difficult, since it is not a military problem, it is not a war. You are not fighting another country invading Nigeria. So, you cannot get a military solution to that.” Agwai wondered how he is expected to pass judgement on the performance of deployed troops when he does not have “all the operators gathering the information and what is happening, the overall plan and the exit plan.” The one-time Chief of Army Staff (COAS), attributed his time in as head of the army and the armed forces to the grace of God, adding that there was insurgency in the southern part of the country at that time but was managed. On the nation’s 53 years anniversary, Agwai said he was glad when Nigeria became Independent, recalling that he started Senior Primary School that same year. “I remember vividly how we used to sing the old National Anthem, ‘Nigeria we hail thee’. I remember also vividly the Coat of Arms, the Green White Green they (the British) gave us. We have come a long way. Continuing, “As human beings, there are always high expectations. And I have always said that the most difficult thing to manage is expectation. There were other challenges, which included the civil war; we had our challenges, but we have also had our good points. “We have championed freedom in Africa. Everybody knows what role Nigeria played in getting South Africa and the southern part of Africa to become free and independent. Everybody knows what we did in Angola, everybody knows what we have done in our sub-region, in Liberia, in Sierra Leone, in Guinea Bissau and so many other places,”Agwai said.

NANS threatens action against ASUU, says strike has been politicized

The National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, has threatened to sue the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, to court over the three-month old strike. The National President of NANS, Yinka Gbadebo issued the threat in his address at the first senate meeting organised by the union at the University of Port Harcourt. Gbadebo accused ASUU of making outrageous demands from the Federal Government. He claimed that ten out of eleven demands made by ASUU had been met, adding that the only last demand which had to do with the issue of earned allowance should not be the basis to keep students at home. “They are asking for change. Change must first start with our lecturers. They are clamouring for earned allowance, they are clamouring for responsibility allowance. Very very soon, we may resort to take laws into our own hands. Ads by safesaver “While on strike, lecturers are still using government properties. They are still living in government accommodations, driving government cars. If you are fighting government, go and return all government properties. “We are saying, where is the interest of the Nigerian student captured in all these demands. In all of the demand of ASUU, government has fulfilled 10 out of 11. What more do they want? How long will they continue to negotiate our future”, he said. The students leader also alleged that ASUU had been compromised by the opposition party stressing that ASUU members were often seen with members of the All Progressive Congress, APC, in Lagos. Gbadebo, however, vowed to sue ASUU to court if the strike continued. “We are going to take ASUU to court. The issues are very clear. Every right thinking Nigerian knows that this issue of ASUU strike has been politicized and that is the truth. Each time Federal government finishes meeting with the lecturers, the next thing you will see is ASUU leaders meeting with APC leaders in Lagos. What for? He alleged. The NANS president finally called on ASUU to devise another means of agitating for their demands.

Apo killing: The squatters attacked the security men first – Army Chief, Azubuike Ihejirika

The Nigerian army had joined the SSS to further justify the claim that the squatters killed at the Apo legislative quarters attacked the combined team of SSS and the military first. The SSS had since the incident claimed that those killed in the operation were suspected members of Boko Haram who attacked the military during their operation in the uncompleted building. Army Chief, Azubuike Ihejirika, had further strengthened the claims of the SSS that the soldiers only returned fire after they were attacked. The claim has since been refuted by those who witnessed the incident, as they have continued to say that the squatters were innocent and did not launch any attack as claimed by the military and the SSS. The SSS had claimed in a statement issued just immediately after the incident that while it went to exhume some weapons purportedly buried by some Boko Haram members, they came under heavy attack, leading to the exchange of gunfire that killed about seven of the attackers. However, the SSS and the military that went for the operation are yet to make available to the public the weapons recovered from the site of the operation. Those who were at the site, had equally disclosed that there was nothing close to weapon excavation, and that the incident resulted from mere eviction of occupants of the building by the owner. Ads by safesaver Meanwhile, the House committee on Public Safety and National Security commenced investigation on the killing on Thursday. Lawmakers are of the opinion that it was completely against the law of the federal republic of Nigeria to have killed those young men, instead of an arrest, terming the action of the military and the SSS unfortunate. “We could not sleep that night and we were even scared to come out the following morning. It is not acceptable for the SSS to shoot people whether they are Boko Haram or Keke NAPEP (tricycle) operators. They should first be arrested and investigated,” said Clever Ikisikpo (PDP-Bayelsa) Mr. Ihejirika told journalists after a closed door meeting of the first hearing on the matter that, the operation was a success as it pre-empted attack in parts of Abuja. “I appeared before the House Committee on Public Safety and National Security on the joint operation conducted by the Directorate of State Security Services and a unit of the Nigeria Army,” he told reporters. “We briefed them and informed them of the mission which was to recover arms and weapons and make arrests. We also briefed them on the fact that on approach to the area, the security men were fired at and they had to return fire and also make arrests.” Meanwhile, the FCT Minister, Bala Mohammed had claimed that his office was not informed before the operation, yet claimed responsibility for the attack and the eventual killings. He said that henceforth, uncompleted buildings that have stayed more than the approved two years will either be demolished or turned to a police post.

Nollywood comic actor, Prince Murphy passes on

Death has struck again in the Nigerian movie industry, globally know as Nollywood, as its comic actor, Prince Murphy is reported to have passed on. DailyPost gathered that the actor passed away two days back after a brief illness. Though, it’s yet known the nature of the ailment that led to his death, close sources said several efforts were made to save the actor’s life, but yielded no positive result.

Apo killings: Findings link building to Obasanjo’s sister; Keke riders confirm Boko Haram infiltration

Emerging facts have punctured earlier claims that the uncompleted building in Apo legislative quarters, where seven squatters were killed with several others injured, is owned by a top military officer. State Security officers and men of the Nigerian Army had raided the shelter around 3am of Friday, September 20, on the ground that some Boko Haram members were residents. The occupants had told Nigerians that an unnamed Army Colonel (sic) issued to them, a one-week vacation notice to vacate the premises or face damning consequences. They also denied harbouring any insurgent/s in their midst, saying they all do menial jobs – including selling water, food, petty goods and riding tricycle (commonly called Keke) to earn a living. But a PREMIUM TIMES investigation has corroborated our Sunday’s exclusive report wherein a reliable source dismissed reports that a military officer owns the building. The online news site on Wednesday revealed that the ownership of the yet-to-be completed mansion was sucesssfully traced to one Mrs. Adunni Oluwole Salisu, believed to be the sister to former President, Olusegun Obasanjo. It reports that the documents from the Abuja Geographical Information Systems (AGIS) shows that the property, located at No. 8 Bamanga Tukur Street, Gudu District, near the Gudu cemetery, belongs to Mrs. Salisu. “Ownership details of property OG247326, unmistakably point to Mrs. Salisu land rights, but neither her, nor the former president, could be reached for comment; although authoritative family sources confirmed the ownership and the relationship.” the paper adds. An SSS officer who spoke under condition of anonymity, told DailyPost, that their mission was “not in anyway related to a military officer’s instruction.” “There’s nothing like that at all. We had placed that area under surveillance for some time as one of the suspects we arrested earlier, confirmed that a strong member of the sect, in company of his foot soldiers, was squatting in that building. “The guy was described as a rugged fellow who would not go down without a fight. Our source added that “This suspect (in detention) also disclosed that the militant buried the arms at a cemetery close by and that he and others would open fire if they see any movement around the (Gudu) cemetery, especially if it was not during the day. On the shootings, he explained that “The truth is it was the Boko Haram guys within that house that started firing when they heard movement. We are professionals; we know what is at stake. So we could not have gone there and open fire just like that. The SSS always respect the rule of engagement. “As we were digging the suspected location of the armoury, several gunshots were directed at us. We had no choice than to defend ourselves. “It was that point we realized that the suspect told the truth when he warned that we would be attacked. If you check, virtually all the survivors were hit at their back, buttock, or leg. He added that “This tells you that they were probably the innocent ones who were trying to flee because some of the occupants actually confronted us. A spokesman for the tricycle association himself confirmed the position of security officials, when he told Channels TV, that “because two or three Boko Haram people were in the building offers no excuse to kill innocent people.” The statement has been received in circles as an admittance that the SSS was right in the first place. Another cyclist speaking to DailyPost, said it is true that some members of the violent sect have infiltrated the riders union, “but what do we do,” he querried. “We have no evidence against them and even if we do, who will dare report to security people. “If you open your mouth to say anything and these people (Boko Haram) catches you, you and your family are finished,” the rider who plies the Galadimawa-Jabi route confided in our reporter Wednesday afternoon. Meanwhile, most of the squatters arrested at the building have been freed after they were found to be clean. Already, the Senate, the Police and the National Human Rights Commission, NHRC, have all promised to carry out a thorough investigation into the incident.
