It’s been a long but interesting journey on the second season of the Etisalat-sponsored TV musical reality show, Nigerian Idol. Week after week, the show never fails to deliver amazing and thrilling performances from the contestants. This week, Nigerian Idol Season 2 presented Nigerians with its best show yet, as its final Top 3 contestants performed songs in honour of the late Afrobeat legend, Fela Anikulapo Kuti.
The show was witnessed by Afrobeat star and eldest son of Fela, Femi Kuti who joined the judges table, as the contestants treated the audience to three rounds of amazing performances.
Performing on the first round, the three contestants thrilled the audience with different Nigerian songs. Mercy Chinwo opened the stage with an electrifying rendition of the song ‘Jerome’. Stephen Onochie, better known as the Loverboy performed ‘Adanma’ in yet another heart-warming way that wowed the crowd. Joe Blue ditching his signature pose, took the stage to perform the evergreen ‘Adure’ by Rex Lawson.
The second time out saw a joint performance by the top 3 contestants in honour of the late Fela Anikulapo Kuti. The contestant came out beautifully dressed with costume to back up their performance as they performed one of the Fela’s songs, ‘Water e no get enemy.’
For the final round, the contestants performed Fela’s song individually, with Steven singing ‘I no be Gentle man,’ removing his shirt to depict the lyrics in the song. Joe Blue, clearly a crowd favorite, had another go at giving his best, singing ‘palava.’
However, it was Mercy’s performance of the popular track, ‘Zombie’ that really brought the house down. Coming out from a box on the stage, Mercy dramatically delivered and took charge of the stage, drawing glowing remarks from Femi Kuti. “It is very hard for anybody to please me when delivering Fela’s song, but with what you have pulled out tonight, I am giving u an A+++. Mercy!
That was an excellent performance,” Femi said.
Speaking on the performance of the contestants, the Manger, Youth Segment, Etisalat Nigeria, Elvis Daniels said that their exploits have “really given us a reason on why we will continue to support the youth.” Nigerian Idol show represents the biggest music platform for young Nigerians who desire to become the next big star in music. At Etisalat we will continue to support Nigeria’s immensely talented youth.”
