Nigerian idol Top 3 Honour Fela Anikulapo Kuti

It’s been a long but interesting journey on the second season of the Etisalat-sponsored TV musical reality show, Nigerian Idol. Week after week, the show never fails to deliver amazing and thrilling performances from the contestants. This week, Nigerian Idol Season 2 presented Nigerians with its best show yet, as its final Top 3 contestants performed songs in honour of the late Afrobeat legend, Fela Anikulapo Kuti. The show was witnessed by Afrobeat star and eldest son of Fela, Femi Kuti who joined the judges table, as the contestants treated the audience to three rounds of amazing performances. Performing on the first round, the three contestants thrilled the audience with different Nigerian songs. Mercy Chinwo opened the stage with an electrifying rendition of the song ‘Jerome’. Stephen Onochie, better known as the Loverboy performed ‘Adanma’ in yet another heart-warming way that wowed the crowd. Joe Blue ditching his signature pose, took the stage to perform the evergreen ‘Adure’ by Rex Lawson. The second time out saw a joint performance by the top 3 contestants in honour of the late Fela Anikulapo Kuti. The contestant came out beautifully dressed with costume to back up their performance as they performed one of the Fela’s songs, ‘Water e no get enemy.’ For the final round, the contestants performed Fela’s song individually, with Steven singing ‘I no be Gentle man,’ removing his shirt to depict the lyrics in the song. Joe Blue, clearly a crowd favorite, had another go at giving his best, singing ‘palava.’ However, it was Mercy’s performance of the popular track, ‘Zombie’ that really brought the house down. Coming out from a box on the stage, Mercy dramatically delivered and took charge of the stage, drawing glowing remarks from Femi Kuti. “It is very hard for anybody to please me when delivering Fela’s song, but with what you have pulled out tonight, I am giving u an A+++. Mercy! That was an excellent performance,” Femi said. Speaking on the performance of the contestants, the Manger, Youth Segment, Etisalat Nigeria, Elvis Daniels said that their exploits have “really given us a reason on why we will continue to support the youth.” Nigerian Idol show represents the biggest music platform for young Nigerians who desire to become the next big star in music. At Etisalat we will continue to support Nigeria’s immensely talented youth.”

Akon,P-Square,Tiwa Savage,M.I and Co join Banky W for birthday Gig

Banky W’s surprise birthday party on Tuesday March 27, 2012 at The Grotto in Victoria Island, Lagos brought out a large number of A- list entertainers. With so much love from fans on twitter, facebook and elsewhere, and a guest list that included Akon, Psquare, MI, Tiwa Savage, Kel, Ini Edo, Skales, Toolz and others, the R&B giant and EME Chairman had a time of his life! “Even when I gbagaun, I don’t get half as many mentions as this ooh…. Thank you so much for the birthday wishes… God bless” the singer said to his fans on twitter, earlier in the day. Before The Grotto surprise party put together by his friends, Banky told journalists in Lagos he plans to dedicate more of his time to “helping young talents grow and do all I can to make the journey easier for talented young people out there trying to build a career in music”. “As I grow older, it’s becoming very important for me to play my little part in developing this industry; to play my own role in empowering our youths, and in extension, the nation. I’ll be happy if I can help more and more upcoming talents escape the hurdles I passed through while coming up. Everyone sees Banky W, Wizkid, 2face, Psquare or D’banj – but people forget that for each one of us that makes it, there are dozens others who fell by the way side; most of them could have made it if only they got more support. I made it to where I am because of the love and support from the media, my label, fans, promoters and my family. I think it’s my responsibility, to make sure I support those coming behind. That’s what I’ve done with Wizkid. We’re working on Skales now, and many more are on the way”. Banky W’s protégé WizKid was missing in action from his mentor’s “Lagos party”, but he had a good reason- he was away in America having series of sit downs and focused discussions with prominent African-Americans and promoters ahead of the forthcoming EME tour. “Happy Birthday to my big bro, Banky W. God bless you more Wizkid wrote in a Twitter shout out to Mr W. Banky W’s third Nigerian album titled R&BW is expected later this year.

I regret not having a baby by now – Tonto Dikeh

Her name is Tonto Dikeh, she’s still single but wants a baby. “I wish I have one (baby), so I could stroll with the baby right now.” This is the true confession of Nollywood controversial actress and the 2005 runner up of the TV reality show, Next Movie Star, Tonto Dikeh. The fair-complexion charming thespian who set tongues wagging with her incendiary performance in Kingsley Okereke’s soft porn flick, Dirty Secret in 2009 in a recent interview opened up on why she’s regretting for not having a baby by now. Excerpts Who I am Tonto Dikeh is a simple girl. I love trying new things. I love to make mistakes, and it makes me learn. I love to make my mistakes my kind of way, and that is just me. I love to make mistakes because I learn from them, and when I mean mistakes, it is not like I see a mistake and I would want to make them and do them. But when it comes I learn from them. My favourite mistake Talking about having a child early, I just see a lot of my friends these days and they have kids and the kids are almost half their heights, strolling and shopping together, it is a cute idea, but that is not a mistake, and it is just the only thing I just regret. No, it does not bother me at all. It is a thing of joy. I am happy for them, I am just happy. I don’t have much of female friends, but I am sure some of them just cope well and I don’t judge them. It doesn’t mean I am scared, not being ready is not being scared. I wish I have one (baby), so I could stroll with the baby right now. Marriage For now, I have no plans, I just concentrate on my work, do the best that I can do and make myself happy, along the line, that could come in, for now, it is not what I am looking forward to. I think irrespective of your profession you can keep a healthy relationship or marriage. Being a star does not limit the happiness you get from them, it depends on the way you carry it or handle it. But if you ask me, I would tell you, it contributes a lot to a large percentage of broken home, because you are famous, and probably the person is not famous. Maybe because she stays out late, because of her work, she travels so much, all these can actually bring strains to the marriage or relationship. Like I would always say, marriage is an institution where you have to learn, you have to sacrifice to do a lot of things. You have to come to an agreement with your partner. But all the same, you can be a celebrity and have a healthy marriage. Breakups of Nollywood marriages Lack of good communication and commitment are what kills a relationship. You need good talking relationship and understanding. At the end of the day, that is one thing, good communication, if I cannot relate to you and you cannot relate with me, if I cannot pass my message to you, if I cannot tell you the reason I have to go and shoot, and if you cannot give me a good reason I cannot go and shoot, then things won’t be easy. So, I feel communication is like a rope that ties two people in a relationship. What do you think about Kate Henshaw and Tchidi Chikere’s marital crises? You know what different individuals with different problems. The truth is, I am not even sure it is true, it can be a rumour. I have not heard from my friends yet, if I have heard from them, I can confirm. I think I heard about Kate Henshaw’s case but I am not sure. It was what people have been saying. My relationship with Tchidi Chikere It has always been a rumour, it has been there for years and it will always go on I think. He is my friend, like I said I don’t even know about that story. I don’t simply know about his divorce story please. I don’t have any advice for anyone. I am not in their positions; I am not worthy to give them any advice, because I am not married. Handling bad press I just think I am careless about all those things. I have always been at the centre of attraction. But you get used to it after a while, then nothing bothers you again. I don’t even bother to read about them again. I just hear it, people tell me. ‘Oh they said this again or they said that.’ It has not been painful for a long time now, I have stop listening for a long time too. What has been the secret of that transition? Loving yourself more and appreciating who you are and what you do. I think of it this way: if I am not an actress I won’t be as popular as I am, so I appreciate that. I try to work more, get more success out of it, and that is it. How I started I think it was my third year in the university when I had contacts from the Next movie Star show, that was when the thought that probably I can do this also began. I have always seen people on TV, especially Rita Dominic, and I will be like, well, I like them. I like the way they dress, I like the way they talk, so I have said I could do it, then when that opportunity came in I grabbed it. I used to be among an organisation where we do stage films, but I never really got to do a stage play with them, but as a child, I could remember myself doing one or two children drama probably in school or in church, but I can’t really remember. My dad and I Yes, he is my favourite because he is the only one alive. I never knew my mother, she died while I was young, I think I was two years or so. Growing up It was very beautiful, I had a lot of love around me, I had my grandmother, I had my father’s and mother’s friends around, it was so good. I think I had the best childhood. Future plans I have a lot of dreams, I really have a lot of them, but it is not something I would really want to talk about, because they are projects I am trying to work on. But it is going to be in the open very soon. As for now, I am working on a movie, My Life My Damage, which is a movie I am co-producing with Uche Jombo, we are going to do a tour, then the premiere, before putting it in a cinemas. We have done the movie, we are actually laying the soundtrack, in fact, we have finished everything.

N14.5bn pension scam: Suspects remanded in prison

An Abuja High Court on Thursday remanded six persons arrested for an alleged N14.5bn fraud in the administration of police pension funds in prison. The suspects – Esai Dangabar; a Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Niger Delta, Atiku Abubakar Kigo; Ahmed Inuwa Wada; John Yakubu Yusufu; Veronica Uloma Onyegbula and Sani Habila Zira – were arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on 16 counts of conspiracy and criminal breach of trust. The charge sheet read to the suspects in the court indicated that between January 2009 and June 2011, in Abuja, the accused persons, being public officers, allegedly diverted the sum of N14.5bn from the police pension funds domiciled in First Bank of Nigeria Plc, an offence punishable under Section 97 of the Penal Code Act, Cap 532, laws of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, Nigeria 2007. They were also accused of stealing N8.9bn between January and December 2009; N4.7bn between January 2010 and February 2011; N858.3m between February 2011 and June 2011; N656.5m on or about January 31, 2011; N462.9m on or about March 24, 2009; and N407.3m on or about December 14, 2010. They were also accused of stealing the sum of N400.2m on or about December 30, 2010; N18m between February 2011 and June 2011; N8.9bn between January 2009 and December 2009; and N4.7bn between January 2010 and February 2011, among others. At the two-hour court sitting, Justice Ababakar Talba ordered the suspects remanded in prison. The defence counsel led by Chief Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN) and Mr. J. N. Egwuonu had pleaded with the court to return the suspects to the custody of the EFCC, from where they were brought to court, pending the determination of their bail application. However, Talba refused the prayer and instead, ordered that the suspects be remanded in prison. Justifying the order, the judge said prison custody was the best place to keep persons undergoing trial. Responding to attempts by the counsel to raise objections to the decision, Talba said, “It is an order of the court.” The judge added, “No law permits remand in any custody, apart from prison.” The suspects had earlier pleaded ‘not guilty’ to the charges after they were read to them by the court clerk. After the accused persons had taken their plea, the prosecution counsel, Mr. Rotimi Jacobs, sought for an adjournment for hearing of the suspects’ bail application. Awomolo, who appeared for Dangabar, informed the court that the bail application had already been filed and served on the prosecution. He also noted that the court should be disposed to granting the accused persons bail. Egwuonwu, who appeared for the second to sixth accused persons, aligned himself with Awomolo’s submissions, and pleaded for an early date for hearing of the bail application. The judge thereafter adjourned the matter till April 3, 2012, for hearing of the bail application, and May 28, 2012, for hearing of the substantive matter. A mild drama ensued after the session, as the accused persons remained in the court, to prevent journalists from capturing their faces. While journalists waited by the door of the court for the suspects to emerge from the courtroom, the accused persons remained inside. They refused to leave, even several minutes after a Toyota Hiace bus with Abuja registration number BR 735 BWR, was brought to convey them to prison. Even when newsmen moved into the courtroom to take their pictures, they found that the suspects had bowed their heads and covered their faces. Policemen in the courtroom tried to stop journalists from taking the pictures of the suspects, even though the court session was over. The accused persons eventually emerged from the courtroom, with some of them shielding their faces, more than an hour after the court ended its sitting. A court official, who did not wish to be named, denied the insinuation that the suspects were allowed to remain in the courtroom for over an hour to shield them from journalists. He told our correspondent that the suspects stayed back in the courtroom to sign their detention papers.

Army raids Boko Haram hideouts in Kaduna, arrests 65

Nigerian Army has arrested no fewer than 65 suspects in Kaduna between Wednesday and Thursday in a renewed onslaught against the fundamentalist sect, Boko Haram. While the soldiers arrested 33 suspected sect’s members on Wednesday at the Barnawa Complex of the city, 32 more suspects were picked up on Thursday in different parts of Kaduna metropolis. Among those arrested, THE PUNCH learnt, were 19 nationals of Niger Republic while a vendor and a fried meat (suya) seller were equally rounded up. Our correspondents learnt that the soldiers were acting under the instruction of the Army Headquarters to carry out the raids. When contacted, Defence spokesman, Col Mohammed Yerima, said he was not aware of the development. “I am not aware of it,” he said on Thursday. However, a source said the 65 arrested suspects were picked up at different locations in Kaduna town, but added that it was premature to categorise those arrested as Boko Haram members. It was learnt that the suspects were being detained in separate guardrooms in a military facility in Kaduna. The source said, “About 65 of them are in custody; after interrogation, we shall be able to establish which of them are Boko Haram members.” Some residents of the areas, where the suspects were picked up have, however, faulted the arrests, claiming that most of those arrested were not Boko Haram members. A petty trader in the area simply called Babangida, claimed that the people arrested were not Boko Haram members. He said, “The soldiers just came to our area without any excuse or reason for arresting those people. They started molesting people who were doing their lawful business and others who come here regularly to buy Suya and other foods.” He explained that when he went to 1 Mechanised Division of the Nigerian Army with some family members of those arrested to know the reasons for the arrests, they were told that the order to arrest them was from Army Headquarters, Abuja. Also, on Thursday, the District Head (Hakimi) of Barnawa, Kaduna, Alhaji Kabiru Zubairu, faulted the claim of the soldiers, describing those arrested as “innocent”. He said, “But I am telling you categorically that my people are law abiding citizens and I can vouch for them that they are innocent of the allegations levelled against them.” Meanwhile, three people were shot dead and five others wounded on Thursday when a soldier attached to the Special Task Force opened fire on a crowd at Tudun Wada area of Jos. Our correspondent learnt that when a dispute arose between family at about 5.00pm, one of the brothers, identified as Pankis Yusuf, invited the soldier to intervene. On getting to the house where many of their neighbours to the family had gathered, the policeman allegedly opened fire on the crowd.

URGENT WARNING: Lagos Govt Now Arresting People For Having No Work, Home Address

According to PUNCH, Lagos State Task Force on Environment and Special Offenses (Enforcement) Unit has arrested 86 suspected illegal squatters, food vendors and aliens in Ikoyi area of the state for not having definite residential address and means of livelihood. It was learnt that the arrest was in response to complaints by residents of the area about the presence of illegal squatters in uncompleted buildings and makeshift shops. It was also learnt that the report of a security investigations conducted by policemen did not favour the squatters, as they were classified as security risk. Task Force Chairman, Bayo Sulaiman, subsequently led policemen that raided the area between 11pm and 1am on Wednesday. Sulaiman said those arrested were found in abandoned houses, shops and were food vendors and aliens. He said some of them were suspected to be part of criminal gangs terrorising Ikoyi residents. The Chairman said, “They were arrested at Lugard Street, Bedwell Street, Glover Street and three different spots in Parkview Estate. “Those arrested were those selling and living in shanties and those living in uncompleted buildings.” Sulaiman explained that the food vendors were arrested because they usually sell food to suspected criminals squatting in uncompleted buildings. He said the raid would continue because government wanted criminals out of the state. He added that the government would no longer tolerate people living in uncompleted buildings, saying a large number of them were criminals. Sulaiman said, “Those arrested will be further investigated and charged to court.”

Court Orders Fred Amata to Pay N600,000 Rent Arrears in 14 Days

Nollywood actor, Fred Amata, was on Wednesday ordered by a Surulere Magistrates’ Court in Lagos to pay one year rent arrears amounting to N600,000 to his landlord. Amata was dragged to court in September 2010 by his landlord, Pa I. Fadoyebo, who asked the court to help him repossess his house from the actor. He claimed that Amata was owing arrears of rent on the four-bedroom bungalow he was occupying at No 8, Razaq Balogun St., Surulere, adding that the rent had accumulated from October 2009 to September 2010. In his judgment, Magistrate Mukaila Fadeyi did not order Amata to vacate the property, but ordered him to pay the arrears within 14 days. He blamed the lack of diligence prosecution on the part of Fadoyebo’s counsel, Mr Y. A Adeshina, for the court’s inability to assist the landlord in re-possessing the house. Fadeyi faulted the tenancy agreement signed between both parties, saying it was not dated while the seven-day quit notice was not served on Amata. Fadoyebo had on Feb. 7 testified that Amata was a bad tenant who brought all manners of people into his compound. Amata was not present throughout the court proceedings and neither he nor his counsel, Mr Chris Okoh, was in court when the judgment was delivered.

EFCC to arraign Perm Sec, five others over N14.5bn pension scam

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission will on Thursday (today) arraign six persons arrested in connection with the N14.5bn police pension fraud at an Abuja High Court. The suspects – Esai Dangabar; a Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Niger Delta, Atiku Abubakar Kigo; Ahmed Inuwa Wada; John Yakubu Yusufu; Veronica Uloma Onyegbula; and Sani Habila Zira – were arrested for conspiracy and breach of trust. The spokesperson for the EFCC, Mr. Wilson Uwujaren, who confirmed the development to our correspondent, said, “They are to be arraigned before an FCT High Court, Gudu, Abuja tomorrow (today) on 16 counts of conspiracy and criminal breach of trust in respect of the N14.5bn.” A statement made available to THE PUNCH by the EFCC spokesman reads, “Esai Dangabar, Atiku Abubakar Kigo, Ahmed Inuwa Wada, John Yakubu Yusufu, Mrs. Veronica Uloma Onyegbula and Sani Habila Zira are to be arraigned before an FCT High Court in Gudu, Abuja tomorrow (Thursday) on 16 counts of conspiracy and criminal breach of trust in respect of the sum of N14,518,567,724.36.” Reports had stated that the agency interrogated three Federal Government officials connected with police pensions two weeks ago. The three unnamed civil servants had allegedly confessed to looting various sums from the pensions fund. Kigo, a Permanent Secretary in the Federal Civil Service who had served in the Police Pensions Office, had been quizzed by the EFCC over a fresh N2bn fraud. THE PUNCH learnt that incriminating documents were found during a search of the Permanent Secretary’s office. He was arrested alongside seven other directors. The Senate Joint Committee on the Investigation into the administration of the pensions scheme had during its one week of public hearing, received evidence on how civil servants falsified documents to siphon pensioners’ money. The PRTT said a whopping N151.6bn and £6m were recovered after the conduct of biometric data capture exercise on pensioners since 2010. Chairman of the Pension Reform Task Team, Abdulrasheed Maina, had told the committee that whereas N5bn was paid to the Office of the Head of Service monthly for the payment of pensions, only N1.9bn was actually required. Also, it was discovered that out of the 141, 790 pensioners listed on the government’s payroll, only 70,657 bonafide pensioners existed. Maina had also told the committee that the Police Pensions Office collected N5bn monthly as claims for its pensioners, while it actually needed N500m. He said, “We discovered illegal withdrawals by staff of the Police Pensions Office using multiple cheques in fictitious names in excess of 30 cheques per day to withdraw cash from their bankers. ”Such illegal withdrawals amounted to N14bn. The PRTT, assisted by the law enforcement agencies, has made substantial recovery of the said stolen monies. “An employee of the Police Pensions Office (name withheld) turned in N1bn cash. Another surrendered three luxury estates with about 27 blocks of deluxe flats he built in Abuja .” The Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, had also confirmed the fraud uncovered by the Maina-led task force on pensions. However, Maina and his team were also accused of sharp practices by the Assistant Chief Accountant in the Police Pensions Office, Mr. Toyin Ishola. But Maina had denied the allegations, saying Ishola presented forged documents to the Senate panel upon which he based his assumptions.

Boko Haram: Northern group carpets Oritsejiafor over dialogue

Umbrella body of Muslims in the North, the Jama’atul Nasril Islam on Wednesday in Kaduna faulted the President of the Christian Association of Nigeria, Pastor Ayo Oritsejiafor, over comments credited to him on the failed dialogue between the Federal Government and Boko Haram. The CAN President last week kicked against any form of dialogue between the government and the sect believed to be responsible for the series of violence in the North. Oritsejiafor said after delivering a sermon at the 46th convention of the United Church of Christ in Nigeria Kaduna that for the continued corporate existence of the country, the government should no longer condone any group threatening the security of lives and property of Nigerians. “I don’t think any sensible government, whether the President is a Muslim or a Christian, will want to sit down and discuss such thing because it is the greatest instrument of disunity that this country will ever experience,” he was quoted as saying. However, the JNI on Wednesday rejected Oritsejiafor’s position on the government engaging Boko Haram in a dialogue. In a statement, the JNI spokesman and acting Administrative Secretary, Mr. Umar Zaria, lamented that the CAN President could make such comments. The statement reads in part, “The JNI does not know what the President of CAN intends to achieve by saying that he is against the Federal Government talking with Boko Haram. “Whatever his reason might be, it should be made public for it takes a masquerade to know another. For indeed, after the Miya Barkatai foiled attempt to bomb a Church in Bauchi State, aren’t we been witnessing the return of peace and security. Is he not interested? “In the light of which I strongly disagree with his assertions, particularly at a time that tension is gradually going down over security upheavals. May I at this juncture call on Oritsejiafor to tell the world the 26 different groups said to be the Boko Haram? Also it is imperative that the CAN President reveals to the nation his motives of not wanting the Federal Government to dialogue with Boko Haram. It seems he prefers the state of violence and anarchy the nation is going through.”

Security scare at US embassy in Abuja … two suspects handed over to Nigerian authorities

There was a security scare at the United States Embassy in Abuja on Monday, following suspected gunshots in the vicinity of the well guarded mission. While one account had it that unknown gunmen fired shots around the embassy, another said it was two teenagers who set off fireworks in an undeveloped plot located a few metres from the mission. The embassy is located on Plot 1075, Diplomatic Drive, Central Business District in Abuja. Immediately the shots were heard, a commotion reportedly ensued while diplomats and other embassy staff were placed on an emergency alert. The News Agency of Nigeria quoted some policemen at the diplomatic zone, which houses several embassies, as saying there was “panic and confusion” after the shots were heard. A petty trader told NAN in pidgin that there was smoke and noise, which led to a commotion. The unnamed petty trader said, “I hear noise and see smoke; people dey run and I think say na knockout and people say na gun shot. Naim I pick my egg roll and kunu and run too.” A member of staff of the embassy, who declined to be named, told NAN that they were “placed on emergency following an incident across the street.” The NAN correspondent claimed to have seen a combined team of policemen and U.S. security officials questioning two teenagers detained in front of the embassy. The embassy confirmed the security scare in a terse statement issued by its information office. It said two suspects arrested in connection with the incident were in the custody of Nigerian authorities and referred journalists to the Nigeria Police Force for further information. The statement reads, “We believe there were shots fired in the vicinity of the US Embassy. The Nigerian authorities have two individuals in custody. “We refer you to the Nigerian police for further information.” The email statement, one of the embassy’s standard methods of communicating with journalists, was sent to one of our correspondents. But the Nigeria Police Force Headquarters and the Federal Capital Territory Police Command denied knowledge of the incident. However, the embassy’s Public Affairs Specialist, Mr. Sani Mohammed, when contacted on the telephone, confirmed the authenticity of the mission’s statement to THE PUNCH. Mohammed said, “We issued the statement and like it states, contact the police for further information.” Sani, however, did not answer further questions, noting that he had no more information to give on the incident. According to the police, there is no report of the incident. The Force PRO, Mr. Olusola Amore, said an officer was dispatched to the embassy to confirm the incident, but the mission allegedly denied issuing a statement about the purported shooting and arrest of two suspects. He said, “I don’t know where you (journalists) got such a statement because we dispatched an officer to the embassy and they (embassy authorities) said there was no shooting around their building and that they did not issue any statement on the matter. “You should examine the source of the statement purportedly issued by the embassy.” Similarly, the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Moshood Jimoh, said he had contacted the Divisional Police Officer in charge of the area, who said there was neither a report of shooting nor any form of violence around the embassy. He also said no arrests had been made. When contacted, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Ogbole Ahmedu-Ode, said, “I’m yet to receive any such report.” The State Security Service spokesperson, Marilyn Ogar, denied knowledge of the report. She said, “You can get in touch with the police as the embassy indicated.” However, there was heightened security presence around some government facilities in Abuja, which included the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation. The last travel warning issued by the American State Department to US citizens visiting Nigeria was on February 29, 2012. It reads in part, “The Department of State warns US citizens of the risks of travel to Nigeria and continues to recommend that US citizens avoid all but essential travel to the Niger Delta states of Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Delta, and Rivers; the South-Eastern states of Abia, Edo, Imo; the city of Jos in Plateau State, Bauchi and Borno states in the North-East; and the Gulf of Guinea because of the risks of kidnapping, robbery, and other armed attacks in these areas. “Violent crime committed by individuals and gangs, as well as by persons wearing police and military uniforms, remains a problem throughout the country. “Based on safety and security risk assessments, the U.S. Mission requires advance permission and justification as mission-essential for US official travel to all Northern Nigerian states, in addition to the locations listed above.” Also, the U.S. Department of State, early in March, updated its travel warning, and restricted travels by its government officials to the Northern part of the country. It had maintained that the risk of attack against Western targets in Nigeria remained high. Worried by armed violence and terrorist activities in some parts of the country, President Goodluck Jonathan had on December 31, 2011, declared a state of emergency in 15 local government areas in Borno, Niger, Plateau and Yobe states. Embassies in Abuja have been on a state of heightened alert since the suicide bomb attack on the United Nations building in the federal capital on August 26, 2011. There have also been reports that Boko Haram may be targeting Western interests in the country, especially in the wake of the recent abduction of some expatriates. A Briton and an Italian abducted in May 2010 in Birnin Kebbi by suspected terrorists were killed by their captors two weeks ago when Nigerian and British special forces tried to rescue the hostages from where they were being held in Sokoto.

Ice Prince wants to date me – Mo’Cheddah cries out

Ko Ma Roll crooner and ace Yoruba rapper, Modupe Oreoluwa otherwise known as Mo’Cheddah is currently in a pool of dilemma. The dilemma, we exclusively gathered has been giving her sleepless night. The young and petite rapper recently opened up that Oleku singer, Ice Prince has been expressing his love for her but she’s in doubt. she said: “He (Ice Prince) is my friend. A very good friend of mine. He is always proclaiming his love for me but I don’t believe him. But he is my very good friend.” Excerpts from the interview Ice Prince and I He is my friend. A very good friend of mine. He is always proclaiming his love for me but I don’t believe him. But he is my very good friend.
He is a beautiful rapper. I love the texture of his voice. His wordplay is amazing and his use of words shows he is widely read. He is intelligent. Listening to him, you just know that intellectually, he is sound. As a rapper, I really, really, really, really like Ice Prince.
How did you come about the name Mo’chedah?
Mo’cheddah is a state of mind. People started calling me Mo’chedah actually. And Mo’cheddah means more money. Originally, it was just Mo. The Cheddah came about when they saw my lifestyle. So, it’s now Mo’cheddah. My real name is Modupe Ola. How I started I was blessed enough to have talented friends that took me up at a very young age and started working on me then to become the full package that I am today. I have been working with them since I was 12, teaching me how to write, teaching me music and how to recognize instruments, teaching me how to present myself as a whole. That was what they were like training me for back then. And this is where I am now.
Tell me about your childhood.
I have beautiful parents. My dad is late now but memories I have of him is so sweet. He was an amazing father. As a kid, I was free-spirited and I am still free-spirited. He brought me up in the way to just enjoy life at its fullest. He let me know that life is short, live it, love it, love everybody around you, have fun, always be happy, nothing is worth making you sad. So, as a child, I was very outgoing, I was very loud, I was very opinionated. And with the talent that God gave me, I used to flaunt it. As a child, when visitors came, I will dance for them and when I went to parties, I will always win every single thing and bring all my presents back home. I just loved being at the centre of attraction. And because I wanted to make a statement everywhere I went, I would practice at home all the time before going out. I grew up at Akoka, at Fola Agoro Estate. We are five in the family. I am number four. I have a kid sister. My immediate brother is seven years older than I am. I am six years older than my immediate younger sister. It’s like everybody around me was older than I am. And that was why I was able to meet my family friends. And that was why I was with them. I had no one to play with. I was always playing with old people. Because there was no one around me. Back then, the hood was like they had a lot of people there and there was nobody my age around, so I’m always with my siblings. There was a lot of love. They never used to leave me behind. I was always somewhere around all the time.
At that age, I was an entertainer, I was dramatic, I was all in your face. And I wanted to do it on a big stage. I was very ambitious as a child. I watched the TV and saw celebrities on the world stage and I wanted to be like them. I wanted to be able to make millions of people smile because of me. I have always looked forward to doing music on a big scale. Then everything just happened in a beautiful way. And then my family friends were also lovers of music. And I just saw that they were a step ahead of me. They were older than I was, they were taking the music business seriously. They had musical instruments, they used to go to the studio to record and I was young and they saw the potential in me. They saw something special in me. And because I always had older people around me, mentally, I was older than I was. And I knew what I wanted. So, they said ok, we could work with you.
I was born on October 16, 1990. My mum is the head teacher in a government owned primary school. And my dad was a banker. Growing under a teacher mother was bittersweet. My mum was something else. But my dad was permissive. To him, you could doanything you wanted to. He put so much trust in us. You wanted to do something wrong but you tell yourself you can’t do it, because daddy won’t like it. My mum was physical. She would take you down. Straight. You can’t just mess with my mum. She would brush you. There was a lot of spanking while growing up, but it was for good. My dad was J.B. Ola. He was an amazing man, he was sweet, he was God-fearing. He would give everything he had just to make anybody happy. He would give anything to a stranger if you came to him with a need, just to make you happy. He was very selfless. My dad was into the profession of money- banking. And that was where I got Mo’cheddah from. Because he did it big. He was a big spender. Among all my siblings we are all different but the same. We are all outspoken. I would never ever change who I am for nothing. I will always stand my ground. I am very, very stubborn in a way because if I am determined to do something, there is nothing anybody can do about it. I always say what is on my mind. Our parents brought us up to be God-fearing. Both my parents were pastors as well. My dad was a pastor before he died and my mum is a pastor as well. I am very white. What you see is what you get. It is not like you see me today, then you see me tomorrow and I am something else. No. My love life There is a lot of love to go around. My love life is beautiful. Because I have beautiful people around me. I have a beautiful manager, beautiful people working with me, I have music. So, yes, I have a big heart. Boyfriend? Hmmm, hmmm, that part, I tend not to talk about it. Because you know I am single and press would like to harass you with all kind of questions: Why are you single? And what kind of guy do you want? Tell us about him. That part of my life, I like to keep mysterious. I hate all forms of scrutiny about my love life. My influences It was definitely 112, Usher, Brandy, Boyz II Men. I listened to Tupac but I don’t really like him, because my brother likes Biggie. So he forced me to like Biggie. So it was Biggie, Eve, Nelly, Ashanti and whole lot of them. Music back then was amazing. I don’t think they are doing music now. Music back then was groovy. Those were my early influences. For me, you listen to Usher back then and you are like oK, let’s go. Ashanti was amazing, Brandy. Then we had Jay Z evolve in a kind of way that I started liking. I like Destiny’s Child as well. Then I love Beyonce so much. Beyonce came late for me. She came later, later, later. I love the way she acts, I love her stage presence, I love the way she controls everybody. And when she is performing, she just reminds me of when I was a child. You know when you are acting on stage and you tell yourself: I am a bad guy. She just has this character going on for her. And yeah, that’s what I love about Beyonce. I like Michael Jackson but for some reasons, he wasn’t an influence. Education For secondary school I went to Our Lady of the Apostles, Yaba. At school, they thought I was joking, they thought I was dreaming. My friends would listen to a song I did in the studio and they would feel like telling me to stop dreaming. But I was not discouraged. I just kept doing what I did. At school, I was good in government and economics. I wanted to be an architect originally. And my Maths became so bad. And I changed my mind. I remember my dad called me one day and said ‘I don’t think science is your forte. I don’t see you being an architect. This is not you. Why don’t you do something that is you?’ My parents came to school and said: ‘We want our daughter to go to arts class.’ The principal was shocked. Because everybody was telling their children to move to science class. And here was my parents wanting me to be moved to arts class. Everybody thought my parents were kind of freaky. It was very, very funny. And I wanted to study mass comm. And then again, my mum was like: ‘oK, you are an artist. Why do you want to study mass comm? Why not go to creative arts?’ She asked me to put creative arts in my form and I did. And I got admitted a couple of months after I finished secondary school. My deal with Knight house music label They were my family friends. Then I would force them, I would sing to them and I would beg to follow them, because I knew they used to go somewhere. They would hold their guitars. I just kept disturbing them all the time until they agreed for me to follow them. And they took me to where they used to make music and everything. They were like 20 artistes. They were so plenty. They were into rock music, they were just made up of young people that wanted to do music. Growing up was so fantastic, because I had so many talented people around me. And you heard beautiful voices, you heard amazing rappers. It was just bliss. I think God just paid us for so much work, for the hard work we did. And at that point in time, because in Knight house, it was not just about us, it was about impacting something positive. It was about standing for something good. I did something with Sauce kid. People call it won beri. And we shot the video and the next thing, I couldn’t walk on the streets anymore. That’s how everything happened. This was the song that made everybody pay attention. My first album came out on the 20th of October 2010. It was called Franchise Celebrity. At 15, I had finished an album. And it was called 15. And I had a track called Franchise Celebrity. And I loved that song so much. That was my favourite song. My CEO said the album was going to make it. It was like Nigeria wasn’t ready for that sound yet. He advised that we wait a bit. So I started working on another album immediately. The Franchise Celebrity is made up of me as a green artiste, different aspects of what makes me who I am, what I believe in, what I want to talk about. There were different tracks in the album. Gospel, soul, party track, there is a song for Nigeria, there is the different sides to me in the album. And why it was called the Franchise Celebrity is because I am so versatile as an artiste. Because of my training in Knighthouse, I got to mingle with different types of artistes. And that influenced me musically. And that influenced my genres as well, because I can’t stick to just one style of music. When I want to write a song, it is hard for me to say I do R n B. My mind is so colorful. And it’s so like I have so many ideas, I just want to try out something. And in Knighthouse, we were always inventing. Everything is just weird. Making music in the studio is an experience. Because we always want to do something different. And that album was me. I wanted to show people how far I can go. That I could do Fuji, I could do rock, I could do pop and I can do it well. I worked with just three artistes: Dagrin, Naeto C and Chuddy K. I just wanted it to be me. I wanted to introduce myself. My music is like me. I cannot be put in a room. I am too big. I am like all in your face. That’s how my music is. My music can come in any form, depending on how I feel. Working with Dagrin I didn’t get to really know him. He was very quiet in the studio. I never ever got the chance to meet him. He was very quiet. He did the track and he was out. There was no talking like that. So, I didn’t really know him. To me, he was a revolutionary. The swag of an English rapper is different from the swag of a Yoruba speaking rapper. But then he speaks his language and you can hear it. Even if you don’t understand it, you feel it. He was a game changer. He came and everything turned around. I respect him a lot. Hip hop in Nigeria today It is growing excellently. And thanks to people like Tribe and El Dee who are revolutionaries because they brought hip hop to Nigeria when nobody was listening. They fought and stood for what they believed in and introduced hip hop to Nigeria. So hip hop is doing really well. Nigerians haven’t really accepted it but the artistes are doing it really well. I’m millionaire Kind of. I am a multimillionaire. I am still young. My mum still gives me pocket money. I keep all my millions in the bank. I am old enough to own an account.

Al-Qaeda group claims kidnap of German in Kano

A video purported to be from al-Qaeda’s North African affiliate has demanded that Germany free a woman jailed on terror charges in return for a German hostage it says it is holding. Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb’s video was obtained by a Mauritanian news agency. In the video, the hostage says his life is at risk if the woman is not freed. Edgar Fritz Raupach, an engineer, was kidnapped by gunmen in Kano in January. “We inform you that your compatriot Edgar Fritz Raupach is a prisoner of the fighters of al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb,” the video said. The group said it is seeking the release of Umm Seifullah al-Ansari, or Filiz Gelowicz, a Turkish-born woman jailed a year ago in Germany for aiding terrorism. Her husband, German national Fritz Gelowicz, a convert to Islam, was among four Islamists imprisoned in March 2010 for plotting to attack US facilities in Germany. At the time, the judge said the men, known as the “Sauerland group”, had dreamed of “mounting a second 11 September 2001″. The statement claimed Filiz Gelowicz was suffering “inhumane treatment” in a German prison. Correspondents say the private Mauritanian news agency which sourced the video, ANI, frequently publishes statements by al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb. The group, led by Abdel Moussab Abdelwadoud, has kidnapped Europeans in the past.
