Lawan arrested, detained

The Chairman of the fuel subsidy probe panel in the House of Representatives, Farouk Lawan, had on Thurday appeared before the Police Task force, admitting that he had received the said 620’000 dollars from Femi Otedola. After some thorough interrogation, Farouk was detained alongside the Clerk of his Committee; Boniface Emenalo who was also said had appeared before the Task Force. The diminutive Chairman appeared before the Special Task Force of the Nigerian Police around 4pm in company of the Clerk of his committee and five of his lawyers. Lawan who was detained immediately was released after an hour and made to appear before the Commissioner of Police in charge of the STF, Ali Ahmadu, who interrogated him for some hours. Our correspondent had reported that the interrogation
was still ongoing at the Luis Edet House when this report was filed. The police had threatened earlier to declare Farouk wanted if he had failed to show up before the Task Force set up to investigate the bribery scandal. Problem started for the Subsidy Probe Chairman when Otedola openly disclosed that Lawan had demanded and received the money, being part of a $3m bribe deal to gain his support, and to favour his Zenon oil in the N1.7trn subsidy loot. Otedola had alleged that Farauk collected the sum of $500,000 in two parts of $250,000 each, while Emenalo, his clerk was used to collect the remaining sum. Farouk however admitted to have collected the said amount, but did so in order to indict Otedola before his other colleagues in the House. Unfortunately, he had not done same before Otedola reported the case to the SSS with the footage and the audio evidence of the transaction. The Nigerian police, after having watched the video recording of the transaction had on Wednesday asserted that Farouk has a big question to answer. Farouk had failed to appear before the Panel on Wednesday. The Nigerian police had as a result vowed to declare him wanted if he continues to slow them down in their investigation.
