Corp Members Service To Humanity

The NYSC scheme which was initiated by Gen. Yakubu Gowon (RTD) in 1973, to most is a success. Whereas of recent, to others, it is a scheme that needs to be scrapped. However, the beauty of the program is the philosophy of promoting unity among the different parts of the country. And this is more so with the attendant challenges it poses. Therefore, when posted to a different part of the country for NYSC, most people become scared of the attendant challenges especially with the growing security issues facing the Nation. This was not different with Agwu Nnanna .U. a medical doctor trained at Ebonyi state university and a native of Okposi in Ebonyi state when he noticed he was posted to Umaisha a rural community in Nasarawa State. Umaisha is a small community in the north-east of Nasarawa State with a population of about 10,000 sharing boundaries with Kogi, Benue and plateau States. Upon assumption of duties as the only doctor at the general hospital Umaisha, he was positioned to have a firsthand idea about the health problems facing the community. This moved him into seeking ways to help the community solve some of the health challenges. It was observed that like most health issues in Nigeria, it borders mostly on preventive measures. This made him propose a community health sensitization and De-worming program which was aimed to cut across the various age groups in the community, the youths, the elderly and children. In doing this he embarked on HIV/AIDS AWARENESS CAMPAIGN for the youths in the community by going to all the secondary schools in the community. Where it was discovered that to most of the students the issue of HIV/AIDS still sounded alien. At the end of which First AID materials and first AID boxes were donated to the schools. Also students who asked questions and answered questions were rewarded with writing materials and exercise books and biros.
